The second of this year’s Alban Way pilgrimages sets off on Friday 3 October, as a group of seven young adults and their leaders begin a journey to Lindisfarne, returning on Monday 6 October.
Excitingly, this marks the first time the Alban Way has undertaken a UK-based pilgrimage of this kind. Designed to be more accessible, much of the journey will be car-based, offering an alternative for those unable to walk long distances. The group will travel to Durham on the first day, visit Durham Cathedral on the second, and then continue on to Lindisfarne.
Preparation
Throughout their discipleship year, the young adults have followed a rhythm of spiritual practices including fasting, the examen, lectio divina, confession, solitude and silence. These disciplines have helped prepare them for the pilgrimage, which will include moments of reflection and opportunities for each participant to lead prayers along the way.

St Aidan was an Irish monk and missionary who became the founder and first bishop of Lindisfarne, establishing a monastery there.
Leave me alone with God
as much as may be.
As the tide draws the waters
close in upon the shore,
make me an island, set apart,
alone with You, God, holy to You.
Then, with the turning of the tide,
prepare me to carry your presence to
the busy world beyond,
the world that rushes in on me,
until the waters return
and enfold me back to you.
