New in Post

To support and encourage those new in post we will contact you to invite you to a ‘New to Post Conference’ when you have been in post approximately six months. This conference is run in partnership with our neighbouring Dioceses in the Eastern Region. They offer a chance to reflect on what you have experienced and noticed so far in your new context. There is opportunity for coaching, reflection, discussion and input.

Feedback in recent years has been universally positive.

Being asked to stop and focus on our context, using a live issue to thrash out with a small group, having reassuring “are you OK in the midst of this?” sessions and brilliant input was exactly what was needed. I didn’t want to go because I was so busy before I went but I was so pleased I did. I almost feel like it should be compulsory for all New to Post (post curacy).

I’ve done a lot of training and this was one of the most helpful courses I’ve been on. This was due to a combination of the course content, the quality of the teaching and a brilliant group of peers who were willing to be honest about their experiences. I felt like the course looked at ’the whole person’, and addressed spiritual/wellbeing challenges as well as some of the more practical issues we might be facing. It was well worth taking 3 days out for at the early stages of my new post.

Support for First Incumbents

The transition from curacy to incumbency can be a time of great excitement and joy as well as challenge and discomfort. The Diocese of St Albans seeks to support all those entering their first incumbency and will invite you to an ‘Incumbency Skills conference’. Run in partnership with our neighbouring Eastern Region dioceses twice a year, it covers the essentials of being an incumbent, including Canon Law, APCMs, PCCs, Finances, DAC and Worship.

We also run a diocesan ‘First Incumbency Leadership Pathway’ which is centred around creating interactive learning and development spaces where you can address the issues that are most relevant to you. You can find out more about this pathway here.
