St James’ Church, High Wych, has completed a new step-free entrance, making it easier for wheelchair users, people with pushchairs and anyone who finds steps difficult to access the church.
The project is the latest stage in a programme of improvements that has included reordering the church interior and installing glazed wooden doors to create a more open and welcoming entrance.
Churchwarden Sam Clark said the work reflects the PCC’s long-term commitment to making St James’ accessible and welcoming to all. He said:
“While the church is a place of worship and sanctuary, we have always wanted to be outward-looking and connected to our community. The new entrance removes a practical barrier and helps extend the welcome we want everyone to experience when they come through our doors.”
The project required significant fundraising, consultation and approvals, but the result is a smooth, step-free route through the church entrance.
Each week the Revd Alison Jackson, Priest-in-charge of St James’, leads the sharing of the peace, offering words from 1 Samuel 25:6:
“Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have.”
The new entrance reflects St James’ ongoing commitment to removing barriers and helping everyone to feel connected, included and valued within the life of the church.
