Clergy Handbook

The Clergy Handbook offers advice and guidance to Clergy in the Diocese of St Albans on a wide range of subjects. In addition, staff at Holywell Lodge and the Bishops’ and Archdeacons’ offices are available to assist you with information and advice – contact details are given on Page 5 of the Handbook.

The material on this website and in this document, whilst it may include some information on matters that are legally binding on clergy, lay ministers and other lay officers and volunteers, should be generally understood as guidance and for information unless it explicitly states otherwise. In particular, it should not be construed as forming part of any employment contract.

Publication date(s) and summary of changes:

December 2023 – v1 Substantial re-write of the Clergy Handbook, replacing the previous (2019) document following major consultation.

April 2024 – v2 Minor update to incorporate new Carers Leave legislation and a minor amendment to Paternity Leave rules.

August 2024 – v3  Minor update to incorporate updates to Maternity, and other family policies.

March 2025 – v4 Minor update to incorporate new Neonatal Care Leave entitlement and requirements to prevent sexual harassment.

April 2026 – v5 Minor update to update contact details and incorporate new employment legislation requirements.
