Priests build up the Body of Christ in the Church to serve the world by:
- Celebrating the sacraments
- Leading worship
- Teaching and preaching
- Pastoral care
- Mission and evangelism
- Presiding over a community
- Pointing to the life of Christ.
Priests serve in a variety of roles including:
- Parish ministry
- Chaplaincy (Education, Prisons, NHS, The Forces etc)
- Diocesan and national responsibilities
- Workplace based ministry
- Pioneering and Fresh Expression ministry.
Priests can have full-time or part-time ministerial roles. They can be paid a stipend, or work voluntarily. They can be called to serve in an Assistant or Leader capacity, in their local home context or deployed nationally.
The normal maximum age for ordination to stipendiary ministry is 53, to self-supporting ministry 58.
Vocations Team: Seeking direction?
The Vocations Team has the task of encouraging and nourishing vocation across the diocese. If you would like to explore your vocation please speak to your incumbent who will contact one of the Advisers from your archdeaconry. There are three or four Vocations Advisers in each Archdeaconry, and it is their role to advise both clergy and those wishing to explore their vocation to any form of ministry in the Church. The team comprises both lay and ordained people.
