“Beneath the concerns around fake news and disinformation lie deeper questions about the nature and value of truth”
Bishop of St Albans, Rt Revd Alan Smith, in a message to a ‘Where is Truth Now?’ gathering in London.
An initiative began in St Albans in 2018 and supported by the Diocese, seeks to explore issues around post-truth, fake news and disinformation. The objective is to develop and articulate a Christian response to these features of 21st Century life and to keep a conversation going around these issues.
A series of events and activities have been organised involving journalists, scientists, academics, technology specialists and church leaders. Christian ministers have joined in discussions alongside rabbis, Muslim representatives and people who make no faith professions.
A number of round table meetings held at venues in London, in St Albans and online, examining the pressing challenges of living in a post-truth world. Discussions have been held around artificial intelligence (AI), threats to public service media, and appropriate Christian responses.
Through this work the ‘Where is Truth Now?’ initiative has produced videos, a Grove Booklet on Responding to Post-truth, and published numerous articles.
An ‘Agenda for Action’ was published following a round-table event held in central London, involving people from a range of professions and faiths.
