The Diocese of St Albans is delighted to welcome the appointment of The Right Reverend Dr Andrew Paul Rumsey as the next Bishop of St Albans. The nomination, approved by His Majesty the King, was announced by 10 Downing Street on Thursday 19 March, 2026. Bishop Andrew is currently the Suffragan Bishop of Ramsbury in the Diocese of Salisbury.

The Rt Revd Richard Atkinson OBE, Bishop of Bedford, is serving as Acting Bishop of St Albans until Bishop Andrew’s instalment later this year. Bishop Richard began exercising day-to-day leadership of the Diocese from 1 May 2025 and is participating in both the House of Bishops and General Synod in this capacity.

Practical arrangements during the vacancy

Matters you would normally refer to the Bishop of St Albans (such as permissions to officiate, retirements and resignations, clergy disciplinary matters, curacy sign-offs, clergy death notices, safe to receive requests, confirmations, and rural or area dean nominations) should continue to be directed to the staff in the Bishop of St Albans’ office at Abbey Gate House.

For all other matters, please continue to liaise with the Archdeacons, Bishop Jane and Bishop Richard, and their respective offices as appropriate.
