Members of St Saviour’s Church, St Albans, enjoyed a guided walk along the River Ver in September as part of a growing partnership with the Ver Valley Society.
A group of 14 people joined two volunteers from the society for the walk, following the chalk stream from Redbourn to Verulamium. Along the way, they learned more about the river, its wildlife and its importance to the local area.
The walk was organised as part of St Saviour’s ongoing environmental work and provided an opportunity to explore a much-loved local landscape while meeting others with an interest in caring for the natural world.
The church has also supported the Ver Valley Society through a donation from funds raised at its summer Beer and Fizz Festival. The contribution will help the society develop resources for young people, encouraging them to learn more about the River Ver and the wildlife it supports.
Rachel Johnston, Environment Officer for the Diocese, said she was particularly encouraged by the partnership between the church and the Ver Valley Society, bringing together care for the environment with opportunities for learning and community engagement.
Following the success of the September walk, another outing is already being planned for spring 2027.
