In a recent presentation to Diocesan Synod, Baroness Brinton shared her perspective on the challenges faced by disabled people within society and the Church.
Baroness Sal Brinton is a prominent figure in British politics. Her career spans many sectors, including education, healthcare, and public service. Baroness Brinton was appointed to the House of Lords as a life peer in 2010. As the President of the Liberal Democrats from 2015 to 2020, she championed a wide range of issues, notably focusing on health, education, and equality. Her leadership and commitment to public service have made her a respected voice in British politics, advocating for change and inclusivity across the UK.
Baroness Brinton gave many examples of the real-life frustrations faced by those living with disabilities. She emphasised the need to shift from thinking of disability as a medical problem to a social model which acknowledges and overcomes barriers. She highlighted instances of inaccessible infrastructure, ranging from public transport to restaurants, illustrating the ongoing challenges faced by disabled people.
Quoting Psalm 41 and referring to the teachings of Julian of Norwich, the Baroness highlighted the strength and support found in faith, reminding us to acknowledge the intrinsic worth of every individual.
Following the address, members of Synod discussed ways in which their churches can improve inclusivity and support for disabled members.
