All Saints’ Hockerill has introduced a new monthly afternoon service called Lego Church. Designed for primary school-aged children, it features plenty of Lego bricks and refreshments and is attracting increasing numbers of families who are new to the church.
Background
The church wanted to offer something accessible for this age group without the large volunteer team needed for activities such as Messy Church. The idea grew around using stop-motion Bible story videos Go Chatter Studios, and animations from Bible Brick Stories. The videos set the theme, while volunteers provide bricks and refreshments.
Before the launch, the church appealed for Lego donations but received none, so second-hand bricks and a projector were purchased. The service began at the start of the school year.
Practicalities
Lego Church starts at 4pm to fit around family and sporting activities. On arrival, children and adults are offered drinks and encouraged to start building. A Bible video is then shown, followed by time to create scenes inspired by the story. After 20–30 minutes, the group shares what they have built and reflects on the story. The service ends with prayer and the Grace.
The session lasts about 45 minutes and is followed by food for the children, such as sandwiches, pizza, fruit and vegetables. This helps families prepare for the school week without needing to provide another meal at home.
Growth
Four Lego Church sessions have taken place so far. Attendance has grown from 22 people at the first gathering to 31 at the most recent, including children from schools across the parish. Most of those attending are new to All Saints’ and not part of the existing congregations.
The group is looking forward to the next gathering in January, where they will be exploring the story of the visit of the wise men to Jesus.
