On Monday evening, the College of Canons of St Albans Cathedral met for Evensong, followed by the formal election of the eleventh Bishop of St Albans.
This marked a significant step in the process of the Rt Revd Dr Andrew Rumsey becoming the next Bishop of St Albans. The election was led by the Dean of St Albans Cathedral and supported by the Diocesan Registrar, acting as Proctor of the Election, along with the Chapter Clerk, Alan Hartwell, who served as Clerk to the Election.
The Canons were unanimous in electing Bishop Andrew, who currently serves as Bishop of Ramsbury in the Diocese of Salisbury, to be the next Diocesan Bishop of St Albans.
Following the election, the next stage in Bishop Andrew’s journey will be the Confirmation of Election by the Archbishop of Canterbury, at which point he legally becomes Bishop of St Albans. This will take place on Tuesday 9 June 2026 at 5.00 pm, at St Mary‑le‑Bow, Cheapside, in the City of London.
