Clergy from the Diocese recently visited the Janmashtami celebrations at the Hare Krishna Temple in Watford, as part of the Diocese’s commitment to building positive relationships and understanding between faith communities across Hertfordshire.
The Revd Dr Alec Corio, the Diocese’s Interfaith Adviser, and Revd John Castle, Team Vicar of St John the Baptist, Aldenham, were among the guests invited to attend the annual celebrations earlier this month, which welcomed civic leaders, faith representatives and thousands of visitors from a range of backgrounds.
The visit provided an opportunity to strengthen links between Christian and Hindu communities. Temple President Vishakha Mataji welcomed guests and spoke about the importance of hospitality, community service and fostering good relationships across faiths and cultures. She expressed her hope that the visit would be the first of many opportunities for dialogue and friendship between communities.
Throughout the day, visitors were able to meet temple members, observe cultural performances and take part in conversations about faith, community life and shared values. Discussions highlighted the importance of mutual respect and understanding, as well as the many values that people of different faith traditions hold in common, including kindness, generosity, compassion and service to others.
