Cracking Food Poverty Together
This year’s Harvest Appeal supports Mission Direct in their work in Kumi, Uganda, by providing materially poor families with chickens. These give them a sustainable and low cost food source, and also provides them with a new income stream because they can sell some of their eggs and new chicks that hatch.
Their first hatchlings are returned to the project so that another family can benefit. Depending on how much money is raised, some funds might also support other food poverty projects, like planting orchards for schools to supplement the diets of their pupils.
Bishop Alan’s message
Dear Friends,
I am delighted that this year’s Bishop’s Harvest Appeal is being run in partnership with Mission Direct.
The project will provide families in Uganda with chickens. These will produce eggs for food, which will help to alleviate food poverty and malnutrition. An important part of the project is that the first hatchlings will be given back to the scheme so that they can be passed on to another family, thus spreading the benefits.
There is huge scope for involving people of all ages but especially young people and children. We are providing a range of resources with ideas and suggestions for local involvement.
This is a programme richly deserving of our time and commitment and I commend it you.
So, please give your imagination free range, and let’s get cracking!

Helen’s Story
Helen is the mother of six children. Over the past few years her community has suffered from several disasters: drought, a plague of locusts and Covid. Fortunately Helen was given a few chickens several years ago. They were easy to look after and gave her eggs and then more chickens and eggs.
The eggs have been an important source of protein in the family’s diet and she has also been able to sell chickens and eggs. This has meant that she could support her children to go to school and eventually purchase a plot of land for her to grow fruit trees.
As well as raising her own family’s standard of living, she has been able to give back to her community. Her first hatchlings were given to another family and she mentored other mothers to enable them to look after chickens.
The 2023 Harvest Appeal Prayer:
God of abundance and grace,
whose Son, Jesus Christ, proclaimed good news to the poor
and fed the hungry:
we pray your blessing on families of Uganda.
May we, your Church, overflow with generosity and joy.
In our giving may we have the imagination and courage
to share our resources with all.
And may your Gospel of salvation and hope
draw people throughout the world ever deeper into you,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
