On Sunday 20 September, eight young adults from The Alban Way will set out on a six-day pilgrimage along the English Way (Camino Inglés) of the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain.
Accompanied by their group leaders — Rachel Drury, Nadine Scarlett, the Revd Dan Drew, the Ven Dave Middlebrook (Archdeacon of Bedford) and Taryn Harris — the young adults will journey together alongside fellow pilgrims, walking towards their final destination: the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Throughout their year of discipleship, the young adults have explored a rhythm of spiritual practices including fasting, the Examen, Lectio Divina, confession and silence. These practices have helped to prepare them for the pilgrimage, where they will have extended opportunities to reflect, pray and listen to God. Along the way, each participant will also have the opportunity to lead morning and evening prayer for the group.
Alban Way Pastoral Lead, Nadine Scarlett, says:
Please keep our Alban Way young adults and their leaders in your prayers as they set off. Pray for safe travels, peace and openness as they prepare, and for deep encounters with God as they walk, pray, reflect and journey together.
The Camino prayer that the group will be using along their journey:
O God, who brought your servant Abraham out of the land of the Chaldeans, protecting him in his wanderings, who guided the Hebrew people across the desert, we ask that you watch over us, your servants, as we walk in the love of your name to Santiago de Compostela.
Be for us our companion on the walk,
Our guide at the crossroads,
Our breath in our weariness,
Our protection in danger,
Our albergue on the Camino,
Our shade in the heat,
Our light in the darkness,
Our consolation in our discouragements,
And our strength in our intentions.
So that with your guidance we may arrive safe and sound at the end of the Road and enriched with grace and virtue we return safely to our homes filled with joy.
