As we continue to discern where God is at work and join his ongoing mission across our communities, parishes, BMOs, schools, and chaplaincies, we also reflect on how best to build further momentum and support this work.
Alongside our existing diocesan provision, over the past few years we have also been working with the Strategic Mission and Ministry Investment Board (SMMIB) to explore further strategic funding, building on the success of our bid for The Alban Way three years ago. This programme has played a significant role in developing young leaders across our schools and parishes.
Earlier this week, we were delighted to share the good news that SMMIB has awarded our diocese a substantial grant to help us grow younger and more diverse communities. In total, £1.14 million has been confirmed for leadership development, education, and capacity building, and a further £1.13 million has been awarded (subject to some clarification) for church planting and revitalisation in Hatfield, Luton, and Watford. In addition, £1.23 million has been agreed in principle for children and young people’s workers, pending updated proposals. Nothing in our £3.5 million bid has been ruled out, and this is an encouraging outcome for our shared mission.
This milestone is the result of a thorough and prayerful process, underpinned by consultation and collaboration with clergy, lay leaders, parishioners, young people, and local partners. Together, we have sought to discern where God is already at work and where we are called to step forward in mission. Every conversation, every piece of feedback has helped shape this vision for the future of our diocese.
What happens next?
1) Clarifying the next steps
We’ll meet with the national Church Vision and Strategy Team later this month to agree the route and timetable for releasing the remaining funds. This includes providing the evidence and documentation they need to finalise approvals.
2) Keeping everyone informed
In February, we’ll host Zoom briefings (especially for colleagues in affected deaneries) to explain what’s needed and answer questions. Diocesan boards will also receive updates through their usual meeting cycles.
3) Starting what’s already confirmed
Work can begin immediately on the Leadership and Education strands, including plans to expand The Alban Way and strengthen mission in schools. These initiatives will help grow younger and more diverse leaders and deepen partnerships between parishes and schools.
4) Practical next steps for every parish
Even if your parish isn’t directly funded, there are plenty of ways to get involved:
- Apply for a Small Mission Grant for local pilots like Messy Church or youth drop-ins
- Explore a Major Mission Grant for larger or multi-year initiatives
- Connect with diocesan training and support pathways for children, young people, and leadership development
- Talk to the diocesan team about mission ideas that fit your context.
