Townsend Church of England School in St Albans welcomed Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester on 24 June as part of its celebrations marking 50 years at its current site.
During the visit, Her Royal Highness met pupils, staff and governors and joined a service in the school’s chapel. Opened in May 2025, the chapel provides a dedicated space for prayer, reflection and worship, reflecting the school’s Christian foundation and commitment to inclusive collective worship.
Rooted in the parable of the Good Samaritan, Townsend’s Christian ethos encourages pupils to love their neighbour, love themselves and love the journey they are on. Its core values of Awe and Wonder, Hope, Love, Respect, Stewardship and Wisdom help shape daily life across the school.
During the visit, Her Royal Highness met pupils, staff and members of the wider school community and saw these values reflected in the school’s life and work.
A highlight of the visit was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Her Royal Highness, marking the 50th anniversary of Townsend Church of England School’s move to its High Oaks site.
Reflecting on the occasion, Headteacher Anthony Flack said:
